David James
President
David has 25 years experience in systems engineering and project management, principally in the areas of Telecommunications, Sonar, Radar, Surveillance and Security. Prior to joining ASA in 1995 as Projects Director he was System Design Authority for a number of major programs and led a Joint Venture between Thorn EMI and Alcatel providing security, access control and surveillance for EuroTunnel. David holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Birmingham, a Masters Degree in Business Administration and is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology.
Gavin Newport
Vice President of Communications and Information Systems
Gavin has extensive Programme Management experience across a range of market sectors. He joined L-3 ASA in 2003 and leads the Communications and Information Systems Business Unit. A fully qualified Electronics Engineer, who is equally adept in commercial and technical areas. Gavin brings a proven track record of delivery in the provision of turn-key solutions and fully managed services to key clients including: Panasonic, Rolls Royce, BMW, Saab, Ericsson, BT, MoD, DERA, Heathrow Express, Swiss Airlines, British Gas, EDF Energy, Western Power Distribution and ITV.
Brian Shand
Vice President of Integrated Defence Systems
Dr Brian Shand leads Integrated Defence Systems business unit with responsibility for the company’s Integrated Missile Defence and Space Situational Awareness sectors. He joined L-3 ASA in 1997 and has worked on many aspects of the company’s data fusion and tracking projects including: project management, systems engineering, software development, system performance analysis, system integration, system test and customer support. Dr. Shand holds a Bachelor of Science in Physics from Exeter University and a PhD in Radio and Space Plasma Physics from Leicester University.
Chris Knapman
Vice President of Business Development
Chris Knapman joined L-3 ASA after a full career in the Royal Air Force, including leading the division responsible for the development of the UK’s Air Command & Control, Air Traffic Control, Space Operations and Missile Defence capabilities. As Vice President for Business Development at L-3 ASA, Chris is responsible for the coordination of strategic planning and BD activity across the company. His role includes corporate communication and marketing and the management of relationships with new partners and allies.
Simon Hall
Vice President of Engineering
Simon joined ASA in 1989 from BAE’s Electronic Warfare group. He worked on ASA’s CASE Toolset (Auto-G), principally on Code Generation from the graphical notation and then became involved in adapting the MACH micro-kernel for use with the TOTS applications produced from the Auto-G models. With the move into communications systems Simon became the Chief Architect of the MultiSwitch family of applications, achieving the goal of producing a framework capable of working in both Commercial and Military domains with a high inherent availability. As VP Engineering, following ASA’s acquisition by L-3, Simon now has responsibility for the methods, tools, and technologies used across the variety of L-3 ASA’s Business domains.
Keith Hardy
Vice President of Projects
Keith Hardy has over 30 years experience in software engineering and project management. He gained his BSc in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Kingston University in 1983, is a chartered engineer and a Member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology. Prior to the acquisition he spent 6 years as a Projects Manager of Advanced System Architectures and was responsible for the largest projects in the Business, including Cormorant and Falcon. Formerly Keith spent some 20 years at Ultra Electronics, working through from Engineer, Team Leader, Chief Software Engineer to Engineering Manager. Keith worked predominantly in the Defence and Maritime area, but was also involved in Commercial projects, including baggage reconciliation systems for Airports.
